Permit Processing

Building, electrical, mechanical, solar, and plumbing permits are now applied for electronically at Town of North Smithfield Online Permitting/License System website; (first time users need to establish your profile by typing your email address and creating a password). 

Building permits for new structures require the following plans and information. 2 copies of a class I land survey showing proposed location of structure, wetlands, utilities or OTWs and well.

copies of construction drawings including the following:

  • Code review page
  • Plan views
  • Interior and exterior elevations
  • Details (foundation, wall types, framing members, interior and exterior finishes etc.)
  • Door and window schedules
  • Project Certifications (if required under RIGL 23-27.3-128.0)

Plans shall be submitted on a minimum of 11 by 17 paper or may be uploaded to the permitting data base.

Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing Permits typically do not require construction drawings; however, dependent on the scope of work, the Building Official may require a plan submittal.

Permits for replacement windows, roofing and siding do not require a plan submittal. Replacement windows require "R" and "U" values and safety glazing stamp if required.

Solar permits are to be obtained by the electrical contractor and should include the combined cost of structural labor and materials together in the cost of completed installation section. Please subcontract or obtain the information from the structural contractor to provide an accurate amount of estimated cost to generate an accurate permit fee.
